A note on SAT algorithms and proof complexity

چکیده

We apply classical proof complexity ideas to transfer lengths-of-proofs lower bounds for a propositional proof system P into examples of hard unsatisfiable formulas for a class Alg(P ) of SAT algorithms determined by P . The class Alg(P ) contains those algorithms M for which P proves in polynomial size tautologies expressing the soundness of M . For example, the class Alg(Fd) determined by a depth d Frege system contains the commonly considered enhancements of DPLL (even for small d). Exponential lower bounds are known for all Fd. Such results can be interpreted as a form of consistency of P 6= NP. Further we show how the soundness statements can be used to find hard satisfiable instances, if they exist.

Reduction of Computational Complexity in Finite State Automata Explosion of Networked System Diagnosis (RESEARCH NOTE)

This research puts forward rough finite state automata which have been represented by two variants of BDD called ROBDD and ZBDD. The proposed structures have been used in networked system diagnosis and can overcome cominatorial explosion. In implementation the CUDD - Colorado University Decision Diagrams package is used. A mathematical proof for claimed complexity are provided which shows ZBDD ...

From RAM to SAT

Common presentations of the NP-completeness of SAT suffer from two drawbacks which hinder the scope of this flagship result. First, they do not apply to machines equipped with random-access memory, also known as direct-access memory, even though this feature is critical in basic algorithms. Second, they incur a quadratic blow-up in parameters, even though the distinction between, say, linear an...

Report on the SAT 2007 Conference on Theory and Applications of Satisfiability Testing

Propositional satisfiability (SAT) was the first decision problem to be shown nondeterministic polynomial (NP) complete and has been the subject of remarkable theoretical work over the years. Moreover, SAT and extensions of SAT find many practical applications, including planning, software and hardware model checking, bioinformatics, equivalence check ing, test-pattern generation, software pack...

Applications of Games to Propositional Proof Complexity

Applications of Games to Propositional Proof Complexity Alexander Hertel Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Computer Science University of Toronto 2008 In this thesis we explore a number of ways in which combinatorial games can be used to help prove results in the area of propositional proof complexity. The results in this thesis can be divided into two sets, the first being dedicated ...

I discuss recent progress in developing and exploiting connections between SAT algorithms and circuit lower bounds. The centrepiece of the article is Williams’ proof that NEXP * ACC0, which proceeds via a new algorithm for ACC0-SAT beating brute-force search. His result exploits a formal connection from non-trivial SAT algorithms to circuit lower bounds. I also discuss various connections in th...
